Anticipated Games at PAX West
PAX West took place in Seattle from August 30th to Sept 2nd, and for that brief window, Seattle became the center of gaming culture, as fans and industry professionals were all on-hand to share and view upcoming titles. From anticipated big budget titles from large companies to exciting additions from indie developers, PAX West had a little something for everyone.
Here’s just a small list of the many games at PAX West to look forward to in the coming year
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - CD Projekt Red - October 15, 2019 - Nintendo Switch
One of modern gaming’s most iconic sagas will be coming to Nintendo Switch this October. Play as Geralt of Rivia as he fights all manner of supernatural creatures. Heavily based on Slavic folklore, the Witcher is an immersive, in-depth journey into a unique world. Which is why even four years after release, it is still one of the most popular, talked-about, and beloved game franchises.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 - Nintendo - October 31, 2019 - Nintendo Switch
Taking place in a haunted hotel where each floor has a different theme, Luigi’s Mansion 3, continues to give a spotlight to Mario’s long-suffering brother, Luigi. He must overcome his fear and make it through all the floors of King Boo’s haunted trap to help his friends save the day.
Trials of Mana - Square-Enix - Early 2020 - PC, PS4, Switch
Secret of Mana was one of the greatest games of the SNES era. I, like many, spent countless hours in its world. Exploring its vibrant world, leveling all those unique weapons. It’s sequel, Seiken Densetsu 3, went unreleased in the United States until earlier this year. With the sequel’s release came news that a remake of Seiken Densetsu 3 was in the works, but that it would be entirely 3D rather than just a graphically updated engine.
Marvel’s Avengers - Crystal Dynamics - May 15, 2020 - PC, PS4, Xbox One
Have you ever wanted to wield Thor’s Hammer? How about throwing Captain America’s Shield? We’ve all had days where we just want to Hulk out and throw a car at someone. Well, now we can in Marvel’s Avengers, an action-adventure game with RPG elements that will let you build and customize the Avengers team you’ve always wanted to have at your disposal. You’ll have skill trees and various costume skins available, in addition to downloadable episodic content.
Final Fantasy VII Remake - Square-Enix - March 3, 2020 - PS4
Final Fantasy VII was a seminal game in the series and in RPGs as a genre. It’s characters and plot twists became part of video game history, and soon, we’ll be able to relive those memories in much greater detail. Announced in 2015, fans are finally going to be able to go back to the world of Cloud Strife and his crew. Get ready to be sad about Aeris’ death all over again.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics - BonusXP - 2019 - Nintendo Switch
A turn-based strategy tactics game based on the Dark Crystal universe? Now that sounds like an interesting premise for a game. Based on the prequel series that just released on Netflix, this game will let you help the gelflings in their fight against the evil skeksis. Travel to the world of Thra this year and fight the good fight.
Cyberpunk 2077 - CD Projekt Red - April 16, 2020 - PC, PS4, Xbox One
The highly anticipated cyberpunk RPG was featured at PAX, where multiplayer was announced as a post-launch addition. Also announced was that the game would be entirely in first person, with the third person shown in some footage to be used in cut-scenes. Cyberpunk 2077, based one a table-top game called CYberpunk 2020, is a fresh addition to the RPG genre, offering a futuristic world to play in where no one is as they seem on the surface.
Everspace 2 - Rockfish Studios - 2021 - PC
Everspace was a surprise hit when it launched in 2017, combining roguelike gameplay with space fighter dogfighting. Everspace 2 seems set to deliver a similar experience. Gorgeous graphics, intense dogfighting, and ever-increasing difficulty are sure to prove both entertaining and frustrating in equal measure, making you want to keep trying.
Borderlands 3 - Gearbox - September 13, 2019 - PC, PS4, Xbox One
With its release just around the corner, and with the franchises decade old large fanbase, Borderlands 3 was a big event at PAX. Promising to deliver bigger action, bigger guns, and more explosions, Borderlands 3 will also have improved RPG elements refining and improving upon Borderlands 2.
Spiritfarer - Thunder Lotus Games - 2020 - PC
Spiritfarer is a unique title about a girl named Stella who is a ferryman for spirits passing to the other side. Featuring an expandable boat where Stella can make additions to her ferry, and a cast of fantastical characters Stella must see to their final destination, the game is more about the journey than the arrival. Stella befriends the spirits, spends time with them, bonds with them, and ultimately has to say goodbye to them. Having to say goodbye to your passengers will be the biggest challenge you face.
