The Mag'har Orcs

Image
The Mag’har orcs are in a unique situation in World of Warcraft’s lore. They are not only from a different planet, Draenor, they are also from an alternate timeline, where history took a number of different turns on Draenor. But they now find their fates linked to the Horde on Azeroth. In the events of Warlords of Draenor, the Horde and Alliance chase the outlaw warchief Garrosh Hellscream through time and space. He flees to an alternate timeline of Draenor, and 30 years into the past. His goal is to prevent the orcs from drinking Mannoroth’s blood, and then to forge them into a vicious force with which to come back to his Azeroth and invade. When adventuring in this alternate Draenor, we encounter uncorrupted orcs, differentiated from the orcs of Azeroth by their lack of green skin (itself a side effect of the Legion’s fel corruption). Eventually, the heroes of the Horde and Alliance help the draenei and Mag’har (led by Grommach Hellscream who refuses to drink of Mannoroth’s blood), d

The Dark Iron Dwarves

Image
The Dark Iron dwarves are relative newcomers to the Alliance, and most of their history is deeply tied in with their fellow dwarven clans the Bronzebeards and the Wildhammers. But they are essentially dark dwarves, with ashen skin and cinders bruning in their hair and beards. Dark Irons are the more ruthless, aggressive clan of dwarves. The history of the Dark Irons is essentially covered in our article of the dwarves of Ironforge, up until the War of the Three Hammers when the Dark Irons left to build their own nation, Thaurissan. Thaurissan would eventually be destroyed when Emperor Thaurissan summoned Ragnaros the Firelord. The Dark Irons would then build a new city inside Blackrock Mountain; Shadowforge City. From this city, the Dark Irons would wage clandestine attacks on Horde and Alliance forces, often coming to blows with their Bronzebeard cousins in Ironforge.  When the current king of the Dark Irons, Dagran Thaurissan, kidnapped the daughter of Ironforge’s king, Magni Bronzeb

The Highmountain Tauren

Image
Long ago, during the War of the Ancients, a tribe of tauren would distinguish themselves and be given a gift by Cenarius. These tauren are the next race we’ll be looking at; the Highmountain tauren. For generations before the Legion’s arrival, the mountain tauren of the area called Highmountain fought with each other for dominance. Four tribes sought to control the passes and peaks of the mountain range, the Bloodtotems, Rivermanes, Highmountains, and Skyhorns. The Bloodtotem tribe were vicious warriors, but cruel and unwelcoming. The Rivermanes were peaceful, focusing on farming and shamanism. The Skyhorms were daring, taking the the skies on great eagles. It is from the Highmountain tribe that the region would get its name after the Great Sundering. As the War of the Ancients rages, and the tauren fought alongside the kaldorei, furbolgs, earthen, and the Wild Gods, one tauren war leader proved himself above all others; Huln Highmountain He successfully led all four tribes into battle

The Lightforged Draenei

Image
“Give me a hundred Lightforged. Barring that, a thousand regular troops”. That, in a sentence, explains the value of the Lightforged Draenei. Their story is not told in great detail in-game, but what is shown is daunting. When the Naaru rescued the draenei from their world as the Legion assumed control, the great dimensional ship split into two vessels. One, carrying the civilians, children, and other non-combatants fled into space seeking new worlds to settle. These refugees would go on to become the draenei that joined the Alliance. The other ship, housing the surviving army and magical users who had fled Argus, were taken and forged into a force used to strike at the very heart of the Burning Legion, the Army of the Light. These draenei were put through a ritual to make them confront their own internal darkness, and the few who survived this ordeal found themselves changed. Lightforged draenei who survive the trial have paler, alabaster skin, compared to their kin, and their eyes gl

The Nightborne

Image
The nightborne are a city-state of night elves that sealed themselves off long ago, preserving their Highborne culture for 10,000 years in isolation before joining the Horde. So if you want to see what kaldorei society was like before the coming of druidism and the purging of the arcane from their society, the shal’dorei of Suramar are right up your alley. 10,000 years ago, as the War of the Ancients raged, some Highborne realized Azshara’s deal with the Legion could spell their doom. So the leadership of one of the kaldorei empire’s greatest cities, Suramar, began working on a plan to save themselves. Suramar, while not as grand a city as the imperial capital at Zin-Azshari, was an important center of night elf learning, commerce, and research. As the world convulsed in conflict, the city’s ruling elite, led by the Magistrix Elisande, created a font of magical energy, similar to the high elves’ Sunwell, called the Nightwell. This font of arcane power, built at the intersection of many

The Void Elves

Image
We now move from the core playable races to the allied races that became playable in the end of Legion and into Battle for Azeroth. In most cases, allied races are offshoots, subraces, or otherwise related to an existing core race. As such, for some of them their background is mostly covered in the related core race’s background. First up, we have the void elves, or ren’dorei. Void elves are the newest group of elves on the scene, as they are blood elves (and Alliance high elves) who have been exposed to void magics and changed to beings infused with the Void’s power. Magister Umbric was one of Quel’danas’ ruling magisters; the magocracy that runs many aspects of Blood Elf society. Umbric believed that the elves’ mastery of the arcane would allow them to be able to resist the maddening effects of eldritch magics, and began experimenting and searching for ways to use void magic effectively. Umbric and his followers would eventually be banished from Silvermoon for continuing to dabble wi

The Pandaren

Image
In Mists of Pandaria, players were introduced to the enigmatic Pandaren. In the past, pandaren had been known mainly through the story of the founding of Orgrimmar, when wandering pandaren brewmaster Chen Stormstout helped Thrall in establishing his people’s new homeland in Durotar. Pandaren are unique among World of Warcraft playable races in that they start out as neutral and choose to join either the Horde or the Alliance. Pandaren history, while long, is shrouded in a vale of mystery. Literally. But before we get to the mists, a quick rundown of pandaren's ancient history is prudent. After the Titans defeated and imprisoned the Old Gods and ordered Azeroth, they left behind Keepers to oversee the world as well as hosts of soldiers and workers to do the tasks the Keepers saw fit. The Keeper Ra went in search of what happened to the Titans when after centuries no word had been received from them Ra would go on to disappear, and in time, the mogu would decide to carry on with what
